Process & Grading

At The Second Standard , we believe that quality is made to last for generations. A used Leatherman or Victorinox is often just as useful as a new one, provided it's received the proper care .

We're not just a resale site. Every item in our shop—whether it's a multi-tool, pocket knife, or outdoor knife—has physically passed through our hands. Below, you can read how we operate and what you can expect from us.

1. The refurbishment process

We believe in pure craftsmanship. Our process consists of three careful steps:

Step 1: Manual deep cleaning Used knives have often spent years in a pocket or toolbox. We clean each one completely by hand. Using precision tools and brushes, we remove dust, sand, and old grease from the pivot points and chassis without removing the original factory structure.

Step 2: Mechanical inspection & lubrication Safety is paramount. We check the locking mechanism and the resilience of every component. Does the knife click securely into place? Doe the pliers operate smoothly? After inspection, we treat the pivot points with high-quality oil to ensure the tool operates smoothly and reliably again.

Step 3: Maintaining the original edgeWe respect the original steel profile as the manufacturer intended. We do not machine-sharpen the blades to prevent unnecessary material loss.

  • Is the knife still razor sharp? Excellent.
  • Are there any signs of wear on the blade? We'll honestly mention this in the specifications. This way, you'll buy an authentic example that remains as close to its original condition as possible.

2. Grading system

Because we value transparency, we use a clear grading system (Grades). This way, you'll know immediately whether you're buying a collector's item or a knife ready for the workshop.

Grade A: As good as new

These examples are practically new. They have little to no visible signs of wear. The mechanism runs perfectly, the handles are tight, and the tools are clean.

  • Perfect for: Collectors, as a gift, or for those seeking perfection.

Grade B: Neat condition

Technically 100% sound, but with minor visual signs. The knife shows signs of wear (light scratches on the casing or normal wear on the paint). The blade is good and functional.

  • Perfect for: EDC (Every Day Carry), campers, and everyday use.

Grade C: Clearly used

For those who prioritize functionality over appearance. These tools have been fully mechanically tested and work perfectly, yet still bear a visible history. Think scratches, blemishes, or a worn appearance that testifies to a previous life. They have character and are ready for hard work.

  • Perfect for: Heavy-duty DIY enthusiasts, construction use, or as a backup tool in the car

At The Second Standard, what you see is what you get. Every product is inspected so you can order with confidence.
